Nigeria floods bring crocodiles and hippos into homes Opari...
Flooding has forced hundreds of thousands of Nigerians from their homes
Dangerous
animals, including crocodiles, snakes and hippos, have found their way
into homes and communities in central Nigeria after devastating
flooding, residents say.
The creatures were carried along flood-swollen rivers, say the authorities."There is now a hippopotamus in [my] house," Benue state resident Wuese Jirake told the BBC. "I hope that when it is tired, it may leave my home."
Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the flooding.
Hundreds also died in the worst flooding in decades.
Vast tracts of farmland have been completely destroyed.
'Hope it will leave' Mr Jirake told the BBC he had returned to his home to find it occupied by the hippo.
"This morning I visited my house. It is still inundated with the flood waters above my waist. There is now a hippopotamus in the house," he said.

Fake soldier arrested with police walkie talkies
Johnson with the seized military uniforms and other items. |
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fake soldier, Samuel Johnson, for impersonation.
According to the authorities of the
command, Johnson was arrested on September 17, 2012, in full military
uniform with the rank of lance corporal. He claimed to be member of the
Nigerian Army attached to Ojo Cantonment, Lagos.
Three police walkie talkies, 10 pairs of
military uniforms, four pairs of military boots and six military belts
were recovered from him.
The Commissioner of Police for the
command, Mr. Umar Manko, said Johnson’s arrest was a proof that some
criminals operated in either police or armed forces’ uniforms.
Manko said, “I have always said that
most of these crimes are sometimes not committed by genuine officers.
Sometimes, you will see somebody in complete uniform that is in action.
The suspect has never gone for military training and yet he does
operations.
“We found in his possession three police walkie talkies, 10 military uniforms, six berets and boots.”
It was learnt that the suspect claimed to have bought the uniforms from a serving soldier attached to NA Intelligence Barracks.
Woman narrates ordeal in kidnappers’ den
Arrested kidnappers of Lagos businessman. |
Women
leader, Redeemed Church of God, Cornerstone Parish, Lagos, Mrs.
Adebusola Odunaya, on Tuesday described her release by kidnappers after
six days of captivity as an act of God.
PUNCH Metro reported last
Thursday that Adebusola had on Saturday, September 21, left home for
Lagos to buy beverages and some other items but could not be found for
six days.
But the 37-year-old Adebusola resurfaced on September 27.
In a telephone interview, Adebusola said
although she could not recognise the exact spot, she was held in a bush
along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and was released after six days.
Adebusola said, “On the fateful day, I was to go to Lagos Island to pick my stock of noodles. It was past 12 noon.
“When I got to Ishaga area, there was no
vehicle there. I decided to go to Agege to board a bus. When I got to
Agege, there was no direct bus going to Idumota on Lagos Island. I had
to board an Oshodi vehicle (molue). As we were already in the vehicle, I
heard a conductor calling Idumota. I had to alight from the vehicle I
was in and went for that.
“When I got there, the vehicle was still
loading. Three women and the driver were inside. I joined them. As soon
as I did, the women then asked the driver to move so that they could
carry people along the road. I became happy that the vehicle would be
fast.
“As we were expecting the vehicle to
move, the conductor came and touched me with the handkerchief he was
holding. That was when I fell asleep. I did not wake until five days
after in a forest along Lagos- Ibadan Expressway.”
Robbers invade estate, shoot Man o’ War member - We have to be more security concious in Nigeria.
There
was pandemonium at Abule Onigbagbo Estate off Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way
when four armed robbers stormed the neighbourhood on Tuesday.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the
robbers attacked a house located on Sogunle Street in the estate and
carted away valuables worth millions of naira.
One of the occupants of the house,
identified simply as Omololu said the bandits might have acted on a
tip-off as they stormed the compound with bags with which they used to
conceal the stolen items.
According to him, the robbers stole shoes, watches, jewellery, money, laptops and other valuables.
He said, “Around 7.30am, about four men
knocked on the gate and told the security guard that they wanted to see
my wife. They didn’t know the exact name of my wife so they then said
they wanted to see the house girl. They told the security guard the name
of the house girl so he (the security guard) then called the house
girl. On getting to the gate, the house girl just opened the gate, and
the bandits entered.
“The robbers tied up the security guard
and then entered the main building. They were specific, they knew where
my wife works and also asked for specific items. The robbers operated
unhindered for a long time. In fact, they even sat down, relaxed and
drank wine.”
Omololu told our correspondent that when
the culprit got to the main gate, he was accosted by a security guard
and a Man o’ War member.
The culprit, who was not carrying any
arm, was then led back to Omololu’s house but on their way, the three
other robbers were said to have spotted them.
“The culprit that was carrying the bag
was not armed so the security guard was able to arrest him. However,
when the other robbers saw that their colleague had been arrested, they
started shooting into the air to scare away residents. In the process,
the Man o’ War official was hit by a bullet,” he said.
PUNCH Metro learnt that as the
robbers attempted to escape, policemen on patrol, who had heard gun
shots, immediately rushed down to the scene and engaged them in a gun
duel.
This, according to eyewitnesses, resulted in a pandemonium as many residents and motorists scampered to safety.
The policemen were said to have killed one of the armed robbers in the process but others escaped.
Meanwhile, the Man o’ War official, identified as Michael Ekueme, was rushed to Eko Hospital.
Omololu urged the police to beef up security in the area due to the increase in robbery during the ember months.
When contacted, the phone of the police spokesperson in the state, Ngozi Braide, rang out.
She did not also respond to a text message sent to her as of press time.
SAD - Gunmen attack hostel, kill two students in Borno
Halima Damcida |
A
final year Law student, Halima Damcida, and another student identified
simply as Abdul of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, were killed
on Saturday after some gunmen invaded a hostel outside the university
premises.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the two students were in a room in the hostel along Road 202 by Bama Road when the hoodlums attacked them.
A friend of the late Damcida told our correspondent that Abdul was a 400 level student of Engineering.
She said, “Halima (Damcida) and Abdul
were very close friends and Abdul had just celebrated his birthday on
Thursday. She went to greet Abdul in his room when some men stormed the
place and killed the two of them. They slit Halima’s throat.
“Halima went to Queens College, she
graduated in 2006 before going to UNIMAID. It’s so sad because she’s the
only child of her mother who lives in Lagos. She was such a nice girl.”
The news of the attack was said to have evoked anxiety in the area.
It was learnt that security agents had since taken the corpses to a mortuary and cordoned off the area.
A source at the state police command,
confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone but added
that the motive for the killings still remained a mystery
The source said, “The incident occurred
on Saturday night when some armed men stormed the hostel which is
opposite the school and killed the victims.
The truth is yet to be known as well as
the motive because the victims were not robbed and such is not common in
that area. But investigations are ongoing.”
As a chartered marketer and associate member of National Institute of Marketing Nigeria and Internatonal institute of marketing London it is my joy to analize the significance of marketing in business plan to all my business fans on my blogazine - hope it assists you in your business plan
Positioning
is highly important in business. How a new business gets a foothold can
be greatly influenced by how close the business is to the people who
really need its product or service. This could be by the degree of
empathy, by sense of belonging, by location, and by identification. A
business may struggle for a long time just because there is a gap
between its product and the people who need it or because the owner of
the business is perceived to be too aloof by customers.
This is especially if economic condition
has made the product to be passing through a buyers’ market period –
where buyers dictate the price and can afford go for substitutes or
completely turn down the use of such a product.
Today, we are going to continue from
where we left the discussion on business plan preparation four weeks
ago, to deal with issues on who is fit to start a business. We stopped
then on the importance of market research in business plan preparation.
We will go further on this salient issue by stepping into the realm of
marketing plan and how it serves as pivot, and how it is regarded as the
hub on which the wheel of business success rotates.
Inside the training room and as one of
the specially-authorised trainers/facilitators to use the standardised
business plan training module of the International Labour Organisation
to help businesses thrive, I have had occasions to interact with several
men and women who found it difficult to take their businesses to the
desired heights. The question mostly on their mind sounds like, “What do
I need to do to better to make my tottering business perform?”
Often, the fact has been that many
Nigerian entrepreneurs have never taken time to discover who they are to
serve in business and there was no clear-cut and decisive marketing
plan for their businesses. Good enough, we have been able to help as
many as we have come in contact with to redirect their focus and reshape
their businesses by not only showing them what to do and how to do it
but also helping them through the process – with after-training
consultation back-up.
Bear this in mind: It is improper for a
business to start without proper marketing plan. Many entrepreneurs
just open their shops without first finding out how the product ought to
be presented or what features should it have before it can become
acceptable to consumers. They only found out after rolling out the
product in large quantity only for them to be rejected in the market.
This shock occasioned by disappointment or rejection had put paid to
aspirations of many aspiring entrepreneurs because they were too dazed
to know where and how to begin again.
Marketing plan is the roadmap to your
business success. It is done so that it can and direct your marketing
initiative and assist in the attainment of your business goals.
It should contain everything you need to
do to identify your customers out of the numerous people within your
business environment. The marketing plan should help you find out the
price your would-be customers are willing to pay, the strategies to
adopt in making your products easily accessible to them and how you
should inform and attract them so that they can patronise you.
What am I saying here? Before you open
your business, you should have first listened to the wishes of your
would-be customers because if you fail to give them what they want and
provide it the way they want it, no one will buy your product. Doing
business has gone beyond coming out to push a product just as it catches
your fancy; it is now about coming out to offer consumers what they are
looking for.
Ways to tell your car is overheating
The
first thing to check in a car that is overheating is to perform a
visual check. First, look underneath the car for any visible sign of a
coolant leak. A light green, yellow, or orange fluid on the floor is a
sign of a leak. A leak can occur anywhere around the engine bay. Check
the radiator reservoir and make sure that there is enough fluid. Is
there is not enough fluid, add fluid until it reach the full mark.
The quickest way to check for coolant is
to perform a pressure test. Hook-up the equipment to the radiator and
apply pressure. This will help you determine where the leak is coming
from. Set pressure to around 16 pound and if the gauge start dropping,
the pressure is not holding then there is a leak somewhere. Now here are
seven reasons to look for in an overheating car.
1. A bad radiator cap can cause the
engine to overheat. A radiator cap should hold pressure according to the
cap specification. If the cap is rusty or looks like it is worn, you
will have to replace the cap.
2. A failed cooling fan will not
help the radiator to dissipate the heat. Coolant flows from the engine
water jacket passage to the radiator. The radiator fan helps remove heat
from the radiator. If the cooling fan fails to do its job the car will
overheat.
3. A stuck closed thermostat will
not allow coolant to circulate around the engine. The coolant will sit
in the engine water jacket and in the radiator causing heat to build up.
Replace the bad thermostat.
4. A failed water pump will overheat
a car. The fins on the water pump have been worn down and are not able
to circulate the coolant.
5. A clogged radiator like most of
the symptoms above prevents coolant from circulating. Keep in mind that a
radiator can look like it is in good condition but in fact clogged.
6. A blown head gasket will allow
coolant to seep into the chamber and burn the coolant. The end result is
low coolant and an overheating vehicle.
7. Bad hoses or worn hoses are
common for a car to overheat. Coolant leaks out of the hoses resulting
in loss of coolant, therefore causing a car to overheat.
Cars overheat most often in very hot
weather. It’s rare with modern vehicles, but even a well-tuned
automobile can overheat. If you find yourself in stop-and-go traffic or
climbing a steep grade on an extremely hot day, and your dashboard
temperature indicator starts to rise or a malfunction indicator light
comes on, here’s how to help your vehicle regain its cool:
At the first sign of overheating, shut
off your air conditioner and open your windows: Doing so decreases the
load on the engine and helps it cool off.
If it continues to overheat, turn on the
heater and blower: Doing so transfers the heat from the engine to the
passenger compartment of the vehicle.
If you’re stopped in traffic and the
temperature gauge is rising, shift into Neutral or Park and rev the
engine a little: Doing so makes the water pump and the fan speed up,
which draws more liquid and air through the radiator. The increased air
and liquid circulation helps cool things off.
Try not to ride your brakes: In
stop-and-go traffic, crawl along slowly, on little more than an idle,
rather than moving up and then braking repeatedly. Brake drag increases
the load on the engine and makes it heat up. If traffic is crawling,
move up only when the gap between you and the vehicle in front of you
gets too large.
Solange EnlistsThe Help of African Style Tribe Les Sapeurs in The Video for Her New Single ‘Losing You’ Shot in South Africa
African fashion and now it’s style is been sought after by celebs and no other than the eclectic Solange Knowles to put the style tribe Les Sapeurs to good use in her music video for single Losing you which was shot in Cape Town, South Africa. Asides the beautiful scenery, the fashion was on POINT. Print looks from Kenzo, Givenchy ran the gamut.
When Melina and I decided to film
‘Losing You’ in South Africa, we really didn’t have a real firm concept
in place. It was sort of a grab a camera and let’s go moment. I knew I
wanted to capture a couple things: the vibe of our friendship and all of
the crazy escapades we’ve gotten ourselves into all over the world, and
the abstract and elegant Le Sape Society. We called Daniele to guide
us, and some of my friends from New York came down to Cape Town and we
all had a very damn good time.- Solange
For the men... this is for you - 6 kind of women every man should avoid
Relationships are good. The various Holy
books recommend marriage, and most men want to settle down with someone
good. However, if you are a woman and unable to find a man who
consistently enjoys your company, then there’s a problem. I’ve tried to
categorize some character traits commonly found in women which tend to
keep the prospective men at bay. If you fall into one or two of these
categories, sister, it just might be time to make a change.
Being judgemental and generalizing: A
few bad experiences don’t mean all men are the same. It shocks me to
hear women say all men are the same. Making such an assertion is not
only wrong, it affects your judgement of men and consequently affects
how you relate to them. A woman who generalizes is usually quick to read
the wrong meanings into men’s actions, and usually reacts irrationally
before even considering their actions. No man will stick around too long
if he’s always feeling attacked and misunderstood.
FG to consider 65 years as retirement age for teachers
The Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai had disclosed the ministry’s readiness to approve the request made by Nigerian teachers that the government should consider 65 years as their retirement age as against the existing 60 years.
Disclosing this in Abuja, yesterday the Minister said that the ministry and the federal governmnet has not discarded the appeal made by the teachers through its highest body, National Union of Teachers ( NUT) on the extension of their retirement age from 60 to 65 years . The minister had divulged that the ministry was working towards the matter, only that it must follow the normal procedure.
The minister who was at a press briefing of the event marking the 2012 World Teachers Day which will be holding on Friday promised to support the teachers in the best possible way in relation to their request, but equally stressed that the higher authority must be made to understand why such concern raised by the teachers must be implemented. He assured that the ministry would not let them down.
The Minister advocated for the revival of commitment amongst Nigerian teacher. He also stressed on the need to encourage committed teacher. Thus, he said, “encourage them with motivation, training, and providing welfare packages as most people in the profession have taken to it as a last resort.”
Abuja driver tricks teenage mother into marriage, sells baby for N500,000
When Peace Asugwo a teenage mother willingly accepted to marry an Abuja based driver out desperation and frustration, she never had inkling of what would behalf her and her one month old baby in less than one week after their marriage.
Peace, an orphan who hails from Agwa Village in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State was impregnated by her boyfriend, one Johnson, thus regarded by her grandmother as a disgrace to the family. Luckily for her, Mr. Kingsley Linus, a driver based in Abuja was eager to marry her regardless of the fact that even though at 16 years, she already had a month-old baby boy.
After he met with her family and the necessary marital rites were performed, Peace, the young bride, happily followed her new husband to Abuja to start a new life.
According to the 16-year old, who was later rescued from the hands of her kidnapper husband, it was a twist of stories when they got Abuja and he lodged her in a hotel in Kubwa, claiming that he had lost the keys to his house and would have to get someone to break the door in the morning.
“Few days later, he introduced a nurse, one Mrs. Martina Onwelikwe, to me as his elder sister who would take care of the infant. Eager to please my in-law, I promptly handed over the baby to her but shortly after that, the supposed nurse and Linus disappeared.”
In her confused state and nowhere to turn to for succor in a strange land, Peace found her way to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and later to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
The agencies set their tracking device in motion and were able to recover the baby alongside four other teenagers from the run-away. It was furthered discovered that Linus leads a syndicate, which specialized in luring teenage mothers with the promise of marriage to dispossess them of their babies.
The Assistant Director, Press and Public Relations of NAPTIP, Mr. Arinze Orakwue, maintained that the case is presently undergoing serious investigations.
He added that some couples who bought babies from the syndicate were also in custody of the agency, but they were shielded from the press as they had agreed to be principal witnesses against members of the syndicate.
Twilight’s Robert Pattinson Named ‘World’s Sexiest Man’
Robert Pattinson, 26, has been voted the “World’s Sexiest Man” by the UK’s Glamour Magazine for the fourth year running.
No wonder Rihanna is already tripping. I’m sorry for Kristen Stewart though. I hope they get back together.
