Tragedy struck in Obinato Community in Amesi, a suburb of Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra on Tuesday following the tragic end of three persons in a 14-feet under ground water tank.
The mysterious death, according to an eyewitness who identified himself as Chukwuebuka; occurred at about 9 a.m. in a yet-to-be completed one-storey building allegedly owned by a Lagos-based business mogul, Alex Muorah.
Chukwuebuka gave the names of the deceased thus: Augustine Dimude, 33 who is a carpenter while Onyebuchi Ezemokwe Chidebere Ezendu are 22 and 23 years old respectively.
He said that the deceased met their untimely death while washing the tanker, which contains some chemicals bought by Muorah.
“I am frightened and worried because we have never seen this type of death before in this town,” Chukwuebuka disclosed.
Chairman of Umudim family, Mr Gilbert Obidiegwu, who also confirmed the sad incident, explained that that shortly after Ezemokwe went into the water tank to wash it, he screamed and it attracted the attention of Ezendu to go for his rescue.
“Ezendu, who was also trapped, shouted for help which attracted Dimude, a passer-by near the building to go for his rescue, but he too was also caught up.
“The fourth person, Ebere Oraekwe, collapsed on the ladder while trying to rescue the three other trapped persons who later died,” Obidiegwu said.
Speaking further, Obidiegwu said all efforts by another rescuer to avert the tragedy were fruitless as the victims were confirmed Dead on Arival the hospital.
He said that the fourth victim, Oraekwe is currently recuperating at the National Hospital, Mkporogwu, while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at Visitation Mortuary, Umuchu.
The bereaved and shocked community, which is currently mourning the sudden demise of the three young men said they suspected ‘foul play’ in the incident, nothing such incident had never happened in the village.
While wondering why Muorah should purchase what they tagged “dangerous chemical” and failed to supervise the cleaning of the tank personally, the Obinato community also appealed to police in the area to apprehend Muorah, whom it was gathered left the village for Lagos that morning, for investigation to help unravel the mystery behind the death.
Report says, the Umuchu Divisional Police Station has detained the caretaker of the uncompleted building, Ferdinand Ezendu over the incident.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Raphael Uzoigwe, who kept mum, promised to contact the Umuchu Divisional Police Station on the incident.
