Betrayal: Woman sets childhood friend up for kidnap in Anambra State

It was indeed a shocking moment of betrayal recently in Onitsha, Anambra State as a lady was arrested for allegedly organizing the kidnapping of her childhood friend. It was gathered that the suspect, Ekwy Okadigbo, lured her friend who is a legal practitioner, Mimiy Onyekweli to a restaurant where she invited her to abduct her.
The victim was, however, fortunate as investigation revealed that her car that they wanted to use to take her to their den just refused to work when Onyekweli was blindfolded inside. And in the confusion, the victim escaped from her abductors and alerted the police. Okadigbo’s grouse with her friend, according to her, was that she refused to give her money when she requested.
“She was said to have informed the suspected gang leader, Chinedu of the bad habit of her childhood friend who was said to be greedy and tight fisted,” a police source revealed. Interestingly, two days before Okadigbo allegedly lured her friend into the hand of the suspected gang, Onyekweli’s father saw the friends together and happily gave Okadigbo N500.000. Following a tip-off from the victim’s relation, the state Police Command, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), led by James Nwafo, a Superintendent, mobilized his men to arrest members of the gang.
Two days after, Onyekweli was said to be eating at  a restaurant and called Ekwy  to join her there as she was eating.   As they were eating  that Ekwy allegedly called her gang and they stormed the restaurant around 6.30pm and kidnapped Onyekweli and put her inside her car. When the kidnappers entered the car, it refused to start, a quarrel ensued among them and this led  the victim to escape  and reported the case at SARS  Office in Awka. The officer in charge of SARS, Supol Jame Nwafor (SP),  who along with his team and arrested Okadigbo.
The state Commissioner of Police,   Ballah Nasarawa, revealed that Okadigbo was the one that allegedly masterminded the kidnapping of Onyekweli so that they could collect ransom. He said that the police arrested Okadigbo while the other members escaped. He explained that the victim after her escape, informed the SARS in Awka. Okadigbo confessing her role, said: “The victim, Barrister Onyekweli and I were childhood friends. It was one of my friends who reported   Onyekweli that she is very greedy and that she does not give out money.
I told my friend I would take the issue up. I have to inform my gang leader, Chinedu, who told me that wherever I see her,  I should let him know by calling him on phone. “Two days later,  Onyekweli’s father saw me and gave me N500,000.00. The victim came to my house and picked me and we went to a restaurant together and while we were eating, I called the gang and they stormed the restaurant within 20 minutes. They told us to lie down and there; they kidnapped the victim and pushed her into her car. Suddenly, the victim managed to escape because her car refused to move and there was a confusion.
My gang started shooting into the air and from there,  we all  escaped.  It was from  my house that the men of SARS came to arrest me. Okadigbo, who hails from Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, said that she is seeking admission into higher institution. It was my friend who pushed me into the act . I am very close to Barrister Onyekweli. I thought if we successfully kidnapped her, I would get money that way. That was why  I planned the kidnapping. I want the police to pardon me and I promised I won’t  do such thing again,” she pleaded.
The victim, Onyekweli, said that it was divine intervention. “I saw my friend, Ekwy Okadigbo making a call when we were eating at the restaurant, then the kidnappers came and brought out pistols , AK 47 and  dragged me on the floor. They asked for my car keys, but the car didn’t start. During the process my brother escaped from the scene. They search for my brother they didn’t see him. They threatened me and told me to start the car. Suddenly, they stared quarrelling among themselves. “I got out of the car and escaped . I jumped the fence and got a bruise and a dislocation in my ankle and toe. I quickly reported the incident at the  SARS office in Awka.
It was my brother’s girlfriend who took  me to the hospital  for treatment,” she said. Onyekweli said: “I was shocked  that it was  my childhood friend, Okadigbo who was given N500,000 two days earlier by my father  that was the one  who arranged with her gang of kidnappers to abduct me. I don’t believe,” she said. The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa explained that another five-man gang who specialized mostly in kidnapping bigwigs in Awka were nabbed by his men. He said they have kidnapped 15 eminent dignitaries   before they were arrested by SARS. He said they carried out an operation at Awka in October 2011 and two of them were arrested in April 2012.
