Jonathan ready to ignore doctor’s advice and attend UN General Assemby with First Lady

With an eye on public relations stunt, President Goodluck Jonathan plans to reunite with his ailing wife, Patience next weekend, and thereafter head out with her the following day to the United Nations General Assembly in New York against doctor’s advice.

Presidency sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Jonathan is expected to arrive New York on September 24 for the plenary debate of the 67th General Assembly, which kicks off the same day.
Mr. Jonathan will also co-chair an event with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg of Norway.
Doctors at the German hospital where Mrs. Jonathan’s remains on treatment have reportedly delayed her treatment by another week while they await test results from body tissues sent out to other European specialist hospitals.
If all goes well, our sources said Mrs. Jonathan would return to Nigeria after the General Assembly. The presidency has, however, maintained official silence about Mrs. Jonathan’s condition, an irony that parallels late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s treatment in Saudi Arabia in late 2009 and early 2010 when Mr. Jonathan was Vice-President.

Meanwhile, a Dubai newspaper is refuting reports that Mrs. Jonathan suffered food poisoning there.
Original reports said the First Lady took ill in Dubai with food poisoning, following which she returned to Abuja only to be airlifted to Germany in a dire emergency. She was then said to have had her appendix, which had ruptured, removed. Subsequent reports said she had further surgery concerning fibroids.
But the Khaleej Times, in a September 8 story, said that food control officials said they are unaware of the alleged food poisoning in the emirate in the first place concerning “Patience Faka Jonathan.”
The newspaper quoted an Assistant Director-General of Public Health, Safety and Environment Monitoring Sector Salem bin Mesmar and the Director of the Food Control Department Khalid Mohammed Sharif Al Awadhi as saying they had not even heard the complaint.
“If she had come here, she would have stayed in and had food from well-reputed places only,” the paper quoted Mesmar as saying. “I don’t think they would serve her anything that is bad. We have not heard anything about such a food poisoning issue.”

Yipee - Lagos to ban smoking in public places

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, on Monday unfolded plans by the state government to ban smoking in public places.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the provisions of the new Lagos State Traffic Laws had prohibited people from drinking or smoking while driving in the state.
Ipaye said though the new law was aimed at reducing road carnage, it was also part of the government’s plans to ban smoking in public places.
“It is an offence to smoke while driving, smoking is totally prohibited for drivers; obviously it is not just for safety reasons it is also for health reasons because we are moving towards banning smoking in all public places.
“It is an offence to drive drunk if you have been taking alcohol; if you’ve been taking drugs this law provides for blood test to determine whether you have ingested drugs which are inconsistent with your ability to drive.
“So, this law makes it an offence to drive without a driver’s licence, without proper plate numbers. It is an offence to use the phone while you are driving except you have a hands-free set so you don’t need to put the set to your ear,” Ipaye said.
Clarifying the misconceptions about the new law, Ipaye said, “It seeks to criminalise traffic offences and sanction offenders, as part of strategy to bring under control, the chaotic traffic situation within the metropolis.”
He said the law was necessitated by the dire need to ensure the safety, health and security of road users.

“Van Persie’s departure has helped our game” – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has admitted that the departure of Robin van Persie, may have helped his players mix up their style a bit. Arsenal were referred to as a ‘one-man’ team last season, as the Dutch striker scored 30 times in the league, to push the Gunners to a third-place finish, despite a disastrous start.
Wenger agrees that this was this case, as everything went through the 29-year-old.
“Sometimes an individual grows up and becomes the main charisma and carrier of the team and then people notice only him,” he said. “Robin van Persie scored 30 goals and when you score 30 goals everyone gives you the ball. That’s as simple as that. Our game at the moment is a little bit more diversified.
“We have a spirit, a desire to play together and the strength of depth. The vibes coming out are that we look like a real team and we enjoy to play together. That’s a good basis and is interesting.”
The Frenchman however, refuses to be carried away by their early form, that has seen them concede just one goal. He insists they would need to overcome tougher opponents, before the picture becomes clearer.
“I think we have a chance [to be title contenders],” he said. “We will know that after 10 games. We have the quality to do it but we have to show how much we want it.
“At the moment I don’t know how strong our opponents are. We’ve not played against any of the title contenders yet. It will be important to see how we do against the bigger teams.”

OPARI - Nigerians are 4th biggest foreign spenders in UK – Guardian report

On her twice-yearly visits to London from Nigeria, Victoria Appiah stocks up on everything she needs for the next six months. “I basically only do food shopping back home,” she says, standing outside Marks & Spencer’s flagship store in Marble Arch, central London.
“It’s not that you can’t get these things in Lagos, but everything here is much more reasonably priced.”If you want cheap products, Chinese-made have taken over in Nigeria, and you can’t always vouch for quality.”
Thousands of Nigerians agree. Visitors from the west African nation are the UK’s fourth biggest foreign spenders, ringing up an average £500 in each shop where they make purchases – four times what the average UK shopper spends.
Holidaying or visiting relatives abroad is increasingly open to millions of middle class Nigerians, with the number of visitors to the UK increasing by more than 50% to 142,000 a year in the decade ending 2011, according to the Office for National Statistics.
In a country projected to become Africa’s biggest economy next year, and the world’s fifth most populous by 2050, businesses at home and abroad are cashing in.
